COVID-19 UPDATE:  WE ARE STILL HERE TO HELP.  The Graduate Student Legal Aid Office will offer our monthly immigration appointments with consultations being held via telephone and/or video conferencing beginning on April 8, 2020. International students can find information about maintaining their F-1/J-1 status on ISSS' website.

General Information

GLAO offers a limited number of immigration-related appointments per month during the spring and fall semesters. Due to the unique nature of these cases, immigration issues can be addressed ONLY during these appointments as our staff attorney does not handle immigration-related cases.

Please note that this service is for University of Maryland, College Park students ONLY.  If you are a UMD undergraduate student, please contact the Student Legal Aid Office by calling (301) 314-7756 or emailing to request an Immigration Appointment.

If you require immediate assistance regarding your case, please contact our office and we will refer you to local immigration attorneys.

Request an Appointment

If you are seeking advice regarding an immigration-related issue, please submit the Fall 2020 GLAO Immigration Appointment Request Form through Terplink. This form will open for submissions on August 1. Appointments begin in September. Note that you will need to sign in to TerpLink with your Campus ID in order to access and submit this form.  This procedure is different from our regular scheduling procedure. Please do NOT schedule an immigration-related appointment through GLAO's online scheduling system. Thirty-minute appointments are available between 10 AM - 1:45 PM on the following dates: (to be determined by August 1st)

Policies for Immigration Appointments

One Appointment: Due to the high demand for this service, graduate students are permitted one appointment with GLAO’s immigration attorney per academic year. As such, please ensure that you come prepared with all of the information, questions, and documents that are relevant to your case. This will ensure that you are able to take full advantage of your appointment. Students requiring additional immigration legal advice following their appointment can reach out to GLAO for a referral to a local attorney or organization.

Meet with ISSS: It is our policy to advise F-1 and J-1 visa holders who are sponsored by the University of Maryland to meet with UMD’s International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) prior to meeting with the immigration attorney.  It is critical that students meet with ISSS regarding the subject of their case/concern in order to determine the potential impacts on their student visa status.  ISSS is the University’s representative and is in the best position to provide students with information to protect their current visa status as a student at the University.  To schedule a meeting with ISSS please visit their website.

Immigration Appointment Disclaimer

The immigration attorney is not an employee of the University of Maryland and provides a service for legal advice and counsel only. Said information and services are limited to the meeting.
